Croatia and Slovenia, 2007

In July and August, 2007, we travelled to Croatia for three weeks and Slovenia for one week. It was a fantastic trip. We spent a small fortune (for us) on lodging, which meant we rented vacation apartments instead of camping and sleeping in roadside turnouts. We even did such decadent things as paying to enter national parks and renting boats. And, of course, we at lots of ice cream.

The kids did great. After the second move, they got used to the concept of a "travel day" -- we tried to have them only every four days or so -- and their initial fears about playing with kids who didn't speak English soon faded. As Ellie explained it to me, "You just go play." They even learned a few words of Croatian.
